Come and be heard

From my comfortable, private room in Worthing I offer short and long term counselling to people aged 11 and over who want to explore their concerns and feelings within a warm, accepting and confidential space. I work with whatever material clients wish to bring me; however common presenting problems include: depression, anxiety, bereavement, stress, panic attacks, relationship difficulties and addiction.

I am a qualified, experienced Integrative counsellor and as an accredited member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) I adhere to both their Ethical Framework and Professional Conduct Procedure.

I am particularly experienced in working with alcohol and drug abuse, having worked in the field of addiction for over 15 years. I can help individuals to discover their own effective ways of working with this issue, and I am committed to ensuring that harm minimisation is at the core of my approach (ie the therapeutic goal will not necessarily be abstinence if that seems to be unsafe, unrealistic or inappropriate at the time).

My approach

The theoretical underpinning of my approach is Integrative; this model brings together different elements from a number of specific therapies including Person-centred (Humanistic), Cognitive-Behavioural (CBT) and Psychodynamic approaches. Based on the belief that human psychology can be explored and understood in many different ways, Integrative counselling is tailored to each individual’s expressed needs and circumstances. All clients will receive from me the ‘Core Conditions’ of the humanistic approach: empathy, unconditional acceptance and authenticity; creating a safe, trusting relationship is a central part of the therapy. More directive techniques may be offered if appropriate and acceptable to the client; for example keeping a record of thoughts and feelings outside of sessions in order to help identify behavioural patterns, triggers etc, learning and practising relaxation and mindfulness techniques and finding strategies to challenge negative thinking. Additionally I may suggest trying more creative methods, such as guided visualisation and sand tray therapy, if the client is willing; these techniques can help people to explore things which may be difficult to express verbally as well as offering the possibility of new perspectives and even solutions.

Overall I aim to safely facilitate individuals’ self-exploration by working alongside them, integrating their preferred therapeutic methods and guiding the whole process at the client’s pace. I also focus on helping clients to find their own ways of building helpful new insights and/or therapeutic ‘tools’ into their daily lives in order to not only improve their emotional well-being but to sustain this improvement once the therapy has ended.

In addition to my private work I am a part-time counsellor for two local charities; an organisation providing support and accommodation to homeless or inadequately housed adults and a counselling service for those who otherwise could not afford it. Other settings I have worked as a counsellor in include a sixth form college and a drug and alcohol agency.

I am wholeheartedly committed to helping individuals from all backgrounds fulfil their potential.
